Why Do TV Commercials, Shows, and Movies Treat Men Like They are ALL Idiots? It's Time to Start Respecting Them Again.

Stop the madness!

How many times have you watched a TV show, a commercial, or a movie, and noticed how the man is invariably clueless, helpless, the "bad" guy, the idiot, or the loser? How many times have you seen men described this way in books or magazines?

It's rare to see the male in the family be the "wise" one anymore-he's usually portrayed as a buffoon of some sort, whom the rest of the family just tolerates...usually good-naturedly, but frequently, he's treated with scorn. The wife or girlfriend is the one who calls the shots, or in a lot of situations, the kids do. Is this how it really is? I don't think so.

Men weren't always portrayed as embeciles...

Now I know that in the "old days", men were always the smart ones, the ones who always knew the answers, and everyone followed their lead. I'm not saying that was right, either. But who decided that men would no longer have any say at all in the decisions, and would always be the "dumb" one?

I can watch a show, or read a book, and know instantly who is going to be the one to solve the problem or save the day. If there is a married couple, it's the wife or child. If it's the workplace, it most likely will be the woman who is in charge, and/or the one who is treated badly, then saves the day in one way or another.

As a wife of a very wonderful man and the daughter of another, as well as the mother to two grown sons, and having a son-in-law I adore, I take exception to the way men are treated these days in the public arena. I cringe when I see men portrayed as idiots, because in my world, they are far from that.

In real life, all men aren't morons or jerks, so WHY are the media and entertainment fields casting them like that so often? Are they that afraid to have a man BE a man? To make smart decisions, and hey, maybe even save the day once in awhile? I can't imagine why any woman would want a doormat for a husband or boyfriend--one that she has total control over--one that never stands up for anything or anyone because he's afraid of his wife or girlfriend. So why does the media portray so many men in this light?

What is wrong with this picture?

It seems to me that they are afraid that women will take offense if they aren't portrayed in a positive way, but they don't worry at all if the men aren't. What is this all about? How is this fair?

Or, for that matter--who honestly believes that CHILDREN should be in charge of everyone around them? Who decided that kids know more than their fathers(or mothers), and should be depended on to solve every crisis? That one really bothers me.

In the real world, most husbands and wives sit down and solve problems together. Co-workers, of both sexes, usually work together and come up with ideas and solutions to sticky situations. Obviously, not in all cases--but again, IN THE REAL WORLD, it happens a lot more often than the fantasy world of TV, movies, and books lead you to believe.

What kind of example is this setting for future generations? Do we want our daughters thinking that it is not only acceptable, but it's also encouraged, to treat their other half like they are lesser than they are? I can see a whole lot of problems with this scenario.

So, in defense of the male members of my family, and all the other terrific men out there, I say it's time to stand up and say:

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!!!!!

This negative attitude towards men is one of the reasons I have quit watching television. I don't need to be told lies by the media, and MOST men are not the idiots TV portrays them to be.

Great hub! I asked a Nashville producer once..."Why can't I say anything bad about a woman in a song?" He said,"Because women buy 80 percent of Country music records...those man hater songs sell like hot cakes!"

Hollywood knows that women almost always control money spent on the family, themselves and children. Producers will suck up any way they can to make a dollar....including trashing men.

Big Hug! :)

I so agree with you, Tam! My mate is a great guy, smart, sensitive, and we both make decisions together. I found his brothers are this way too, as well as a mutual friend who is a good husband and Dad. When I hear comments from friends and loved ones that "all men are the same", meaning they are up to no good, I realize they have not experienced healthy relationships with males, reason why there is the negative perception of men in general. I have been there done that, meaning being in unhealthy relationships when younger, but life has taught not all men are idiots.

Ivorwen-Thanks for your comment...and I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this trend. It really is ridiculous, isn't it?

Tom--First, and most important...hugs back! :)

I remember when you first told me about that, and that shows how long this has been going on, doesn't it, since it was over 10 years ago that he told you this...it's mind-boggling, and again, ridiculous!

You are the main reason I wrote this hub...because you are nothing like the media is portraying these days. :)

VioletSun--You said:

"I have been there done that, meaning being in unhealthy relationships when younger, but life has taught not all men are idiots."

I've been there, too, but, like you, am fortunate enough to have many more men in my life who are NOT idiots, also. It's too bad that there are others who haven't realized that yet, and tend to enjoy making men look like real dolts...it just sickens me.

Thanks so much for coming by and commenting--I appreciate it! :)

Larkin--Like your father and I, by any chance??? :)

Thanks, too--I'm glad you read this, and all the comments, so you know that I am not alone in feeling this way! :)

Thanks Nancy! You're right, there are good women out there, too, but unfortunately, the media seems to think they are the only ones who are! :)

if you watch cleaning product commercials you would think all men were children and the wife were his mommie..good hub!

Stacie-thanks for commenting! You're right, and when that happens I just cringe...I would never talk down to my husband, or my father, or my sons, the way they have women doing on TV, and in books. I respect and love them too much.

I've been wanting to write about this for a long time, and finally was able to do it--it's great to see that so many other women feel the same as I do.

Thanks again for stopping by--I appreciate it! :)

Bad comments on television in regards to men have broken some marriages and homes, thanks for this revelation and i hope people will learn from what you have written.

You are absolutely right. But there are exceptions: men who enjoy homosexual behaviors and black men still get portrayed as wise counselors and courageous heroes.

Great, thought-provoking Hub!

James--thank you! Yes, I have noticed those exceptions at times...it would be nice if that, too, could be more fairly represented. :)

Tammy- it's good to see that someone else has noticed this issue. Television has really started to play into a lot of stereotypes, and it has gotten to the point where I refuse to watch nearly anything- outside of the news. Nice Hub.

Thanks Matt. Yeah, we've been talking about this for a long time--it's pretty disgusting, what passes for families or "real men" on TV anymore...

Thanks for stopping by! :)
